- To educate families regarding choices in childbirth
- To promote natural childbirth with minimal intervention
- To encourage and support breastfeeding
- To encourage communication and cooperation between parents, midwives, childbirth educators and other health care professionals and institutions
- To support planned, midwife-attended home births
- To support free-standing, community-based birthing centres
- To encourage families to take an active role and assume responsibility for decisions regarding their care
- To assist families to achieve the birth experience they desire in the setting of their choice (hospital, home or birthing centre)
- To promote midwifery as a viable option to meet families' needs for quality maternity care in all settings
- To be a resource for parents-to-be seeking information about pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and related topics
- To promote and monitor implementation of midwifery into the current health care system
- To compile information on individual midwives', physicians', and hospitals' practices and intervention rates
- To increase our public visibility
